Criminal Law:

As we all know, criminal law involves the government vs the citizen in the most serious nature. Even misdemeanor convictions can have harsh consequences on people who made a mistake, but who otherwise have led law abiding lives. Felonies, those crimes punishable for more than one year in the state prison, go beyond being harsh to being devastating. Felony convictions can mean a loss of civil rights for a long period of time after the matter is over, if not for life.  Also, though treated differently, juvenile offenders are generally within the ambit of criminal law. Thankfully, most juvenile offenders need not have a life-long stigma if the matter is handled properly. Nevertheless, incarceration away from family can be traumatic.

As I indicate in my "About Me" page, I have an undergraduate degree in criminal justice and worked for a law enforcement agency upon graduation from college for 8 years. Over the past 17 years as a lawyer I have handled many serious criminal matters, as well as juvenile matters. They have ranged from simple misdemeanors, especially drunk driving, to serious felonies such as attempted murder and serious sex offenses.

For the less serious matters, I typically handle the matters alone or perhaps with one investigator. For the more serious matters I may use the "team" approach. That is, perhaps bringing in co-counsel with a particular expertise, as well as employing specialized investigators and consultants.

If you or a family member ever witness a crime, of course, I would encourage you or anybody to do their civic duty and cooperate with the police or "authorities."   That said, if you or a family member are ever suspects of a crime DO NOT ever talk with the police, always consult with a lawyer.  No matter how much the police may try to play upon your fears or decency, once somebody is a suspect, the police are not there to help him/her.  If in doubt whether you are a suspect, err on the side of caution and talk with a lawyer before talking with the police.
